However, most people will never awaken their energy, including many who try. You shouldn't worry about it just "happening to you." Just be where you are. Surrender to who you are now, and go from there.

Your response is very helpful. I've been growing more conscious by paying attention to my beliefs and I have had some experiences of the divine. They scared me and highlighted a lot of my ego problems, showing me I'm not ready for a full blown awakening. But it's nice to know it's OK for me to keep questioning beliefs/processing pain without forcing some sort of grand, premature awakening. (As if I have a choice over any of this. :))

Most people have to actively choose to become more conscious–to be more aware of reality. People can do that by learning from spiritual teachers, practicing staying as awareness and observing their thought patterns, meditating, and many other spiritual practices. This leads to a gradual process of losing the ego rather than a more abrupt shedding of the ego from awakening.

Some of your confusion may simply be how everyone is using the term spiritual awakening differently. For many people, awakening just generally means to become "better" spiritually somehow. And I would encourage you to not worry about "levels." Instead, be where you are. Go within, and start to pay attention to how your ego thinks to find out what you're attached to.

I had never thought of it that way before. How does one grow on the spiritual path without trying to awaken their energy? What's the difference between growing consciousness to a high level and a spiritual awakening?
